Material Passports

Promoting a circular economy in the construction sector requires a large amount of information. Some of the information is already available, but not in a centralised place. Other information is unknown, or is not publicly available. Material passports were invented to centralise all available information in a logical and structured way. They are coupled to a material, element or component of the building and make it possible to update the information during the life cycles.

Façade Identification System (FIS)

Goal of the tool

  • Making façade elements traceable, both during the construction process and during the exploitation phase

  • Making the logistic flows transparent, to be able to follow and improve during the construction, operation, transformation, renovation and/ or dismantling phase of a building

  • To measure the use of façade elements 


The circular economy will be the new economic model in which information provision plays a key role. The availability of reliable and verifiable information about the applied products, systems and materials is essential. Only this way the total service provision of a building can be optimised. FIS makes it possible to identify physical components throughout the entire life cycle and to link the related information to the product. Information can be added, or called up, associated with the specific product from different sources.


Use FIS when you...

  • want traceable façade elements and structured information

  • want to have insights in your property

  • want to promote the easy maintenance, repair and reuse of façade elements

Limitations of the tool

  • Only available in Dutch

  • The tool is not an open source tool. In 2018 the system was tested in practice with several partners on the basis of a number of pilots.

  • It is unknown if information on reusable (or reused) and demountable façade components can be added.


Madaster Services

Goal of the tool

To reduce construction waste by giving materials an identity. 


The Madaster platform functions as an online library of materials in the built environment. It registers, organizes, stores and discloses data with a great deal of attention to security, privacy and continuity. In addition to providing insight into the materials and products in your building(s), the platform generates an up-to-date and detailed material passport of your property, gives insight in the degree of circularity of your building(s) and visualises the financial (residual) value of your real estate at the time of construction and demolition. The BIM model is central to the platform.


Use Madaster when you...

  • want ​the documentation on the materials and the components to be provided, saved, viewed and shared by the parties involved in the construction process

  • want insight into the applied materials and products, the degree of circularity and the financial value of your real estate

  • need a library of different building materials and products

Limitations of the tool

  • To use the platform, you need to register and pay.

Material Passports Platform

Goal of the tool

  • Increase the value or keep the value of materials, products and components over time

  • Create incentives for suppliers to produce healthy, sustainable and circular materials/building products

  • Support materials choices in Reversible Building Design projects

  • Make it easier for developers, managers and renovators to choose healthy, sustainable and circular building materials

  • Facilitate reversed logistics and take back of products, materials and components


The Materials Passports Platform is a large database which contains sets of data describing characteristics of products. More than 300 materials passports for various products, components or materials are developed. Each material passport contains information on the manufacturer, the function of the product, patents, installation, estimated costs and the material health. Material passports will be added gradually by many different manufacturers. 

Not only products, but also buildings can be implemented in the platform. The passport of the building can be coupled to the passports of the products used in the building. 

Use Materials Passport Platform when you...

  • want to track different components of the building and their occupancy, repairs, renovations, repurposing and decommissioning and quality.

  • want to add your product to the platform: as a manufacturer of products it is possible to add your products to the platform. See the website of BAMB:

Limitations of the tool

  • The Materials Passports Platform is still a prototype. It is ready to be tested by industry partners, but it has not been tested on a project yet.

  • It is not possible to use the platform straight away. However, having a look at the platform is possibe by logging in with a general account; User: Guest pass: bambplatform.
